Mr. Bird Nest and I Couldn't Be Prouder...
Our son Rick treated our grandson Nicholas to cream yesterday after he picked him up at school. They were celebrating a special award he got. He was given the "Terrific Kid" award at Mountain View Elementary!
He's in 4th grade and he was selected to receive this from his teacher. Now, I've met her, but I can't remember her name. I just call her "Mrs. Poodle Skirts". The reason I call her Mrs. Poodle Skirts is that instead of swearing (which I personally would never do...yeah, right) he told me she says, "Oh, poodle skirts!" Don't you just love her already. This is her last year of teaching, she's retiring. He just loves her and he has made great strides in her class this year.
A month or so ago, he was doing a PowerPoint presentation for his class. Heck, I did those for work but I sure didn't do them in 4th grade (OK, back in the stone age, nobody even knew the word computer).
His Papa and I would give him the award everyday and not just because he's our oldest grandson.
Three years ago, we took him to Florida for a week on his Spring Break. He was seven at the time. One night we went to a restaurant and my cousin Betsy asked if we should help him with the menu. I said no, he'll be OK. He told the waiter, "I'd like to begin with the Calamari" and then he asked about the fresh seafood specials. No, he didn't need any help. We've been taking him out to dinner since he was a baby and his other grandparents live at Pinehurst, NC and he eats at the clubhouse there, when he visits.
He loves to come to our house to swim, help work in the yard, do crafts and build things. He'll be playing football this year for his fourth season and he's now a die hard Pittsburgh Steeler fan. His Papa and I love that, since we're Steeler fans too. I never seen him bully anyone, he's invited to every birthday party, he's always courteous with adults and loyal to all his friends.
Yep, he's a "Terrific Kid" all right!
His adoring Nana,
Gretchen
